- Feed hatchlings daily. Adjust juvenile and adult feeding according to size, body condition, activity and temperature.
- Provide secure hiding places, shade, clean water and enough room to choose warmer, cooler, wetter and drier areas.
- Measure temperature and humidity at tortoise level. Do not rely on room temperature or weather reports alone.
- Red-footed tortoises do not brumate. They require dependable heat during cold weather.
Diet and Feeding
Red-footed tortoises are omnivorous forest and forest-edge tortoises. Their captive diet should be based primarily on varied plant matter, with fruit controlled and animal protein offered only occasionally.
Plant Foods
- Dandelion greens and other verified edible broadleaf weeds
- Hibiscus flowers and leaves
- Mulberry leaves
- Collard, mustard and turnip greens
- Endive, escarole, romaine and arugula
- Spineless Opuntia cactus pads
- Squash, green beans, carrots and sweet potato as part of a varied diet
Kale can be used as one item in a varied diet; it should not be grouped with spinach as though the two have the same oxalate content. Spinach should not be a routine staple. Iceberg lettuce provides little nutritional value and should not replace more nutritious greens.
Fruit
Redfoots accept fruit readily, but fruit should not dominate the diet. Berries, papaya, melon, apple, banana and grapes can be offered in controlled portions. Too much fruit can produce loose stool and displace more nutritious, fibrous foods.
Protein and Commercial Diet
Earthworms, appropriately sized insects or another suitable animal-protein source may be offered occasionally. Mealworms can be used in moderation; high-fat waxworms should be rare treats rather than routine food. Mazuri Tortoise Diet or another appropriate forest-tortoise diet can be used as a supplement, not as the entire diet.
Dust food with calcium according to the animal’s age, diet and UVB exposure. Avoid indiscriminate oversupplementation.
Feeding Schedule
- Hatchlings: feed daily.
- Juveniles: feed daily or on a schedule appropriate to growth and body condition.
- Adults: commonly feed three to four times weekly, adjusted for outdoor grazing, activity, season and body condition.
Feed on a tray, flat rock, rubber mat or clean grass to reduce accidental ingestion of loose substrate. Remove spoiled or contaminated food promptly.
Water and Hydration
Provide a shallow, stable water container that the tortoise can enter and exit safely. Clean and refill it every day and whenever it becomes contaminated.
At Sam’s Giant Tortoise Farm, we routinely soak young Redfoot tortoises only during the early hatchling stage. Once a healthy Redfoot is approximately four inches long or about one year old, we discontinue routine soaking. By this stage, the tortoise should know how to drink independently from a shallow water dish.
Healthy Redfoot tortoises past this size and age normally do not need scheduled soaking to maintain hydration or stable health when they have unrestricted access to clean water and are kept under appropriate temperature and humidity conditions. Continue to provide a shallow water container at all times, regardless of the tortoise’s age or size.
If an older Redfoot appears unable to maintain hydration without being soaked, treat that as a possible husbandry or health warning rather than making soaking the permanent solution. Review the enclosure’s temperature, humidity and water access, and consult a reptile-experienced veterinarian when dehydration, weakness or illness is suspected.
Housing and Enclosure Setup
Indoors, use a spacious tortoise table, wooden enclosure or large opaque-sided enclosure. Avoid selecting housing by gallon capacity alone; usable floor dimensions and the ability to create a temperature gradient are more important.
Outdoors, provide a secure pen with solid walls, shaded retreats, clean water and protection from dogs, wildlife and escape. Walls should be tall and strong enough for the size of the tortoise, with corners and the ground line secured.
Provide hides, plants or visual barriers, and enough space for normal walking and foraging. A heated shelter is required when outdoor temperatures fall below the animal’s safe operating range.
Substrate and Humidity
Red-footed tortoises are tropical animals that benefit from moderate-to-high humidity. For hatchlings and juveniles, a practical target is generally around 70–80%, together with good ventilation, a humid retreat and walking surfaces that are not continuously saturated.
Humidity should not mean cold, stagnant or filthy conditions. A tortoise must be able to move between humid cover and cleaner, drier walking areas.
Outdoor pens can use grass or firm natural soil. Indoor humid areas may use coconut coir, peat moss, sphagnum moss or another moisture-holding substrate. Sam’s Giant Tortoise Farm often uses indoor/outdoor carpeting in feeding and indoor areas to reduce accidental substrate ingestion. If loose substrate is used, place the feeding dish on a rubber mat, cafeteria tray or other clean surface.
Spot-clean daily and replace contaminated material as needed. Provide mudholes or shallow wallows outdoors during hot weather where appropriate, while maintaining clean drinking water separately.
Temperature and Heating
Maintain a daytime ambient range of approximately 82–85°F with a basking area around 90–95°F. Hatchlings generally should remain around 75–80°F at night. Adults housed outdoors need a consistently heated shelter during cold weather.
Air temperatures in the 90s, and occasionally near 100°F, may be tolerated when the tortoise has deep shade, water, humid retreats and cooler ground-level refuges. These temperatures are not the preferred daily target for a tropical forest tortoise.
Daytime Indoor Heating
For indoor housing, use a properly mounted daytime basking lamp that supplies heat and appropriate ultraviolet light, or use separate basking and UVB fixtures. One combined heat/UVA/UVB bulb currently used at Sam’s Giant Tortoise Farm is the MIXJOY 100-watt reptile heat and UVA/UVB bulb. Equipment is an example, not a substitute for measuring the enclosure. Mount all lamps securely, follow the manufacturer’s distance requirements and verify the actual temperature at tortoise level.
Night Heating
At night, use a ceramic heat emitter or another non-light-producing heat source when heat is required. Ceramic heaters should be securely mounted, guarded from animal contact and controlled appropriately so the enclosure cannot overheat. Do not leave bright basking or UVB lamps on overnight; tortoises need a normal dark period.
Lighting and UVB
Direct outdoor sunlight is the preferred UVB source when climate and security permit. Glass and plastic block useful UVB, so sunlight through a window does not replace direct exposure.
Indoors, provide an appropriate reptile UVB source for approximately 11–13 hours daily, together with a daytime basking area. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s placement and replacement guidance. The bulb may continue producing visible light after useful UVB output has declined.
Behavior, Temperament and Group Housing
Red-footed tortoises are often curious, active and responsive animals. They commonly forage and explore during the day, although activity changes with temperature, humidity and season.
They can be maintained in compatible groups when the enclosure is sufficiently large and contains multiple hides, feeding areas and visual barriers. Group housing is not automatically safe. Males may fight, breeding males may repeatedly pursue or bite females, and dominant animals may prevent others from eating or using preferred shelters.
Inspect grouped animals for bites, weight loss, hiding, repeated mounting, reduced feeding or exclusion from heat and shelter. Separate animals whenever an individual is being injured or chronically stressed.
Health and Warning Signs
A healthy redfoot is normally alert and responsive, with clear eyes, quiet breathing, a firm shell, regular feeding and normally formed stool. Individual behavior varies, so learn what is normal for your tortoise.
Seek Prompt Veterinary Advice For
- Bubbles or discharge from the nose, wheezing, open-mouth breathing or raspy breathing
- Closed, swollen or sticky eyes
- Unusual lethargy or prolonged refusal to eat
- Weight loss or failure of a growing juvenile to gain weight
- Soft shell, abnormal shell growth or weakness
- Shell discoloration, odor, softness, pitting or draining lesions
- Persistent diarrhea, visible parasites or abnormal stool
- Heat stress, including frantic escape behavior, weakness or loss of coordination
New animals should be quarantined from the established collection and evaluated for parasites and other health problems. The larger and more frequently changing the collection, the greater the need for a consistent quarantine and fecal-testing program.
Natural Range, Size and Lifespan
Red-footed tortoises occur across a broad portion of South America and occupy forests, forest edges, savannas and other seasonally variable habitats. Their wide distribution helps explain the considerable differences in size, shell form and coloration seen among geographic populations.
- Hatchling size: commonly about 1½–2 inches in carapace length.
- Adult size: commonly about 11–14 inches, with smaller and substantially larger individuals.
- Lifespan: frequently more than 50 years and potentially much longer with excellent care.
Geographic Forms, Captive Strains and Color Morphs
Red-footed tortoises vary considerably across their natural range. Many locality names used by breeders are practical descriptions rather than formally recognized subspecies. Appearance alone cannot always prove geographic origin, especially when ancestry is undocumented or bloodlines have been mixed.
Cherry Head and Brazilian Forms
Cherry head redfoots are associated with eastern and southeastern Brazil and are known for vivid red or orange coloration, domed shells and frequent marbling. Adult size varies; many remain smaller than large northern or southern animals. Other Brazilian animals may show more yellow coloration. These labels should be used carefully when ancestry is not documented.
Suriname and Guyana Forms
These are often described as the classic northeastern type, commonly with a very dark carapace, lighter scute centers and orange-to-red head and limb scales. Size and appearance vary among individuals.
Venezuelan and Colombian Forms
Animals described under these regional names may have lighter coffee, brown or gray carapace coloration and paler yellow-to-orange scales. Plastron pattern and adult size vary. Documented ancestry is more reliable than color alone.
Gran Chaco Form
Southern redfoots associated with the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay, Bolivia and northern Argentina are often robust and can grow larger than many other redfoots. They are commonly less brightly colored and may have dark mottling on the plastron.
Andrews Redfoot Captive Strain
The Andrews Redfoot is a South Florida captive strain associated with animals rescued after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The founding animals and their descendants lived and reproduced outdoors in South Florida, with eggs hatching naturally in the ground. The strain is known at Sam’s Giant Tortoise Farm for robust outdoor-raised animals, domed shells and large adult size.
Important classification note: Andrews Redfoot is a locally developed captive strain name. It is not a scientifically recognized geographic locality, subspecies or separate species. Statements about its history and characteristics describe this captive bloodline and the farm’s experience with it.
Hypomelanistic, Albino and Selectively Bred Lines
Hypomelanistic redfoots have reduced dark pigmentation. Albino redfoots lack normal melanin and require careful management of lighting and exposure. High-marbling, starburst and other names may describe selectively bred appearance traits. A color morph is not the same thing as a geographic locality.
