The African Sulcata, or African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), is an active, powerful grazing tortoise that can become extremely large and may live for many decades. A small hatchling is easy to house today, but its owner must plan for a large, secure outdoor enclosure, a heated shelter during cold weather, strong fencing and protection from predators.
This guide follows the Sulcata from hatchling through adulthood. Normal, Ivory and het Sulcatas use the same basic husbandry system. Individual animals may grow at different rates, so health should be judged by the entire animal and its established pattern rather than by color morph alone.
Quick-Care Summary
Feed young Sulcatas every day. Build the diet around appropriate dark leafy greens, grasses and a properly formulated high-fiber tortoise food such as Mazuri. Keep fruit rare and avoid animal protein, bread, dairy products, seeds, nuts, avocado and sugary foods.

Offer fresh food daily, provide a dependable thermal gradient and measure UVB at the tortoise's shell height. Hatchlings are soaked for approximately 20-30 minutes in shallow warm water. A shallow drinking dish should also be available and cleaned whenever soiled.
Young Sulcatas should be checked every day. Confirm that the animal is alert when warm, walks normally, uses all four legs, eats regularly and produces normal stools. Weekly weights provide an early warning when a hatchling is not progressing normally.
Diet and Feeding
Sulcatas require a high-fiber, plant-based diet. Feed hatchlings and young animals daily. Variety is important, but variety does not mean feeding every available grocery vegetable. The foundation should be suitable leafy greens, safe grasses and weeds, and a properly formulated tortoise diet.
Useful grocery greens can include romaine, escarole, endive, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens and dandelion greens. Edible grasses, pesticide-free safe weeds, cactus pads, pumpkin and squash may also be offered. Chop or soften coarse foods as needed for very small hatchlings.
Mazuri tortoise food can be used as part of the diet. Moisten pellets for small hatchlings and follow the product directions. When a balanced commercial food is used regularly, remember that it already supplies calcium and other nutrients.
Fruit should be a rare treat rather than a major portion of the diet. Too much fruit can disrupt normal digestion. Never feed meat, dog or cat food, eggs, dairy products, bread, crackers, processed foods, sweets, seeds, nuts or avocado.
Adult Sulcata Diet: How We Feed on the Farm
Adult Sulcatas are grazing animals designed to consume large quantities of relatively low-calorie, high-fiber plant material. Suitable staples include grasses, grass hay, peanut hay, banana leaves and vines, mulberry leaves, grape leaves, hibiscus leaves and flowers, cactus pads and other safe broadleaf plants.
At Sam's Giant Tortoise Farm, adult diets are built primarily around Mazuri tortoise food, peanut hay, alfalfa hay, banana leaves, grasses and vines. Seasonal foods may be added for variety. Adult animals can be fed every day when most of the food is appropriate grass, leaves, vines and hay; on the farm, concentrated or prepared foods may instead be rotated through several feedings each week.
Small Sulcatas may have difficulty biting coarse stems. Fine leafy material can be separated from tough hay stems, and leaves can be chopped until the tortoise has enough jaw strength to manage coarser forage. Do not mix sugary fruit into hay or chow. Wet, sugary meals can contribute to abnormal stools, gas, bloating and constipation.
Feed adults from a clean tray, flat stone, concrete pad or other washable surface. Never throw food directly onto loose sand, gravel, soil, mulch or coco fiber where particles can adhere to every bite.
Critical Food Warning: Do Not Feed Spinach
Never feed spinach to Sulcata hatchlings. In Sam Pascucci's experience, spinach can cause severe constipation and intestinal problems in young Sulcatas and may result in death. Spinach should not appear in mixed salads or spring-mix products offered to hatchlings. Read the ingredient label rather than relying on the name printed on the package.
Water, Hydration and Soaking
Hydration is essential even though Sulcatas are associated with arid regions. Provide clean drinking water in a shallow, stable dish that the animal can enter and leave safely.
Soak hatchlings for 20-30 minutes in comfortably warm, shallow water. The water must remain shallow enough that the tortoise can easily keep its nostrils above the surface. Never leave a hatchling unattended in water.
Use a dedicated tortoise soaking container. Empty, wash and disinfect it after use, and wash your hands after handling the animal or its equipment. Keep reptile equipment away from food-preparation areas.
Water for Juveniles and Adults
Larger outdoor Sulcatas should have dependable access to clean water. Use a low-sided, stable dish or a shallow cement pond that allows the tortoise to enter and leave without becoming trapped or overturned. Keep the water only a few inches deep for smaller animals and size the feature to the tortoise.
Sulcatas commonly walk through, soak in and defecate in their water. Inspect and clean dishes or ponds regularly. In dry climates and during extended periods without rain, dependable drinking water becomes especially important.
Routine soaking becomes less important as an animal becomes larger and reliably drinks from its water station. Continue to watch hydration, stools, activity and body weight rather than assuming a large tortoise cannot become dehydrated.
Temperature and Thermal Gradient
Sulcatas must be warm enough to digest food and remain active, but they also need room to move away from the heat. Create a gradient rather than heating the entire enclosure to one temperature.
For young Sulcatas, provide a basking area approaching 95-100 F, a warm general area in the 80s, and a cooler retreat. Use an infrared thermometer to measure surfaces where the tortoise actually sits and walks. Do not estimate temperatures by touching the surface with your hand.
At Sam's Giant Tortoise Farm, young Sulcatas are not exposed to temperatures below approximately 65 F. Cool rain, wet ground and wind can be more dangerous than the air-temperature number alone. Bring young animals into a protected heated enclosure before deteriorating weather arrives.
Humidity Without a Wet Enclosure
A young Sulcata can benefit from access to a warm, humid microclimate. This does not mean keeping the entire enclosure damp. The most useful arrangement combines a warm humid retreat with firm, dry walking and feeding areas.
A sleeping hut or humid hide may contain a controlled area of damp material that helps retain moisture. It must remain warm, reasonably clean and ventilated. The tortoise must be able to leave it and walk onto a dry surface.
High moisture combined with inadequate heat can contribute to respiratory illness. Avoid cool, wet conditions, stagnant air and constantly damp floors. The goal is a choice of microclimates, not a uniformly wet habitat.
UVB Lighting and Calcium
Indoor Sulcatas require effective UVB exposure to support vitamin D3 production and normal calcium metabolism. Visible light does not prove that a lamp is still producing adequate UVB.
At Sam's Giant Tortoise Farm, UVB is measured with an RGM-UVB meter that reports microwatts per square centimeter. For young Sulcatas, we aim for approximately 75-100 uW/cm2 at the height of the tortoise's shell. Measure the location where the tortoise actually basks, not directly beside the lamp.
Allow the lamp to warm up before testing. Screens, distance, lamp angle and bulb age can change the reading. Test periodically and adjust the mounting height or replace the lamp when the reading falls below the intended range.
These numbers apply only to a meter that reports uW/cm2. Do not use 75-100 as a target on a UV Index meter; that is a different measurement scale.
Animals receiving natural unfiltered sunlight and a balanced diet that includes fortified tortoise food generally do not require routine vitamin D3 supplementation. Indoor animals still require measured UVB. A fine calcium supplement may be used appropriately, but do not heavily coat every meal, especially when a fortified commercial diet is already being fed.
Indoor Housing: The Three-Zone System
A successful indoor enclosure gives the tortoise meaningful choices. One end contains a warm basking zone, the center contains food and water on an easy-to-clean surface, and the opposite end provides a cooler retreat or sleeping area.
The enclosure must be large enough for the animal to walk, turn and move between zones. Smooth-sided walls help prevent climbing. Heat and lighting equipment must be securely mounted, protected from contact and controlled with dependable thermometers or thermostats as appropriate.
Keep the arrangement simple. Remove hazards that can trap or overturn the tortoise. Smoke alarms, remote temperature sensors and cameras add useful protection but do not replace daily inspection.
Substrate and Footing
The preferred indoor walking surface is indoor/outdoor carpeting that can be removed, cleaned and replaced. Sod or natural grass can work outdoors, and hard, dry, compacted soil can provide good footing. A firmly compacted soil-and-sand surface is different from loose sand that can be swallowed.
Do not use loose sand, loose gravel, coconut fiber, coco coir, bark or deep mulch as the principal walking or feeding surface. Food placed on loose material can collect particles that are swallowed with every bite.
In Sam Pascucci's microscopic examinations of Sulcata stools, fine coconut fibers have appeared bunched together like strands in a rope. Deep mulch can also allow the feet to sink while the plastron slides across the surface. Growing tortoises need firm footing that encourages normal walking and leg development.
If damp mulch is used to support humidity, confine it to a warm sleeping hut or humid retreat. Do not feed on it, and do not make it the animal's principal exercise surface.
Outdoor Housing
Outdoor sunlight, grass and room to walk are valuable when weather permits. Young Sulcatas require a secure enclosure with walls they cannot climb or push beneath and a strong wire top that protects them from birds, raccoons, rats, dogs and other predators.
Inspect fences at ground level because Sulcatas dig and repeatedly test boundaries. Provide both sun and shade, a dry feeding location, clean water and a protected heated shelter when necessary.
Do not leave hatchlings outside during prolonged cool, rainy or windy weather. A greenhouse covering may retain warmth while allowing useful light, but many plastics and glass products block UVB. Measure the UVB beneath any covering rather than assuming it passes through.
Adult Outdoor Enclosure Construction
Adult Sulcatas require a strongly built outdoor enclosure. A light decorative fence is not sufficient. Use solid concrete masonry, reinforced wood or another barrier capable of resisting digging, repeated pushing and the weight of a large tortoise.
As a practical starting point, adult walls should generally extend at least 24 inches above the ground. A buried barrier approximately 12-24 inches deep can discourage digging. At Sam's farm, rebar is driven into the ground around vulnerable perimeter areas and spaced closely enough that a tortoise cannot dig between the bars. Local soil, drainage and construction conditions determine the final design.
Avoid see-through perimeter fencing. A Sulcata that can see the other side may continually push, climb or dig at the barrier. Corners, gates and the ground beneath gates deserve special reinforcement. Walk the perimeter regularly and repair new digging before it becomes an escape route.
Provide enough open ground for grazing and exercise. Sulcatas commonly destroy fragile landscaping and may eventually eliminate grass in a heavily stocked pen. Protect irrigation, electrical equipment, drains, foundations and plants that may be toxic.
Adult Huts, Winter Heat and Summer Shade
Every adult enclosure needs a shelter that serves as shade and a cool retreat during hot weather and as a warm, dry refuge during cold weather. The doorway must be wide enough for the tortoise to enter without scraping its shell, while the interior should not be so large that it is impossible to heat efficiently.
Even in South Florida, Sam's farm uses tortoise huts with heaters controlled by automatic thermostats. Overhead radiant heat must be mounted securely and protected from animal contact and fire hazards. Confirm temperatures with independent thermometers and inspect the animals each evening during cold weather.
Young Sulcatas are protected before temperatures approach 65 F. Healthy, established adults tolerate more variation, but Sam's farm secures adults in their heated huts when the forecast approaches the mid-50s. The protected hut should remain dry and comfortably warm; temperatures in the 70s are preferable during significant cold. Forecasts can be wrong, and wind and rain increase the danger.
In northern climates, a heated garage room or purpose-built indoor winter enclosure may be necessary for months at a time. It must provide adequate floor space, firm footing, ventilation, measured temperatures and effective UVB or safe access to natural sunlight when conditions permit.
Burrowing and Multiple-Tortoise Safety
Sulcatas are powerful natural burrowers. A single animal may be allowed a carefully located burrow where soil and drainage are suitable, but the opening and surrounding ground must be inspected for collapse, flooding, escape routes and proximity to structures or utility lines.
Multiple Sulcatas may stack inside the same burrow or narrow shelter. An animal deep inside can be prevented from exiting by tortoises blocking the entrance. Provide more than one appropriately sized shelter and check every animal daily, especially during severe heat, rain or cold.
Do not permit a burrow where stormwater can enter or where the animal can dig beneath a fence, slab or building. Owners must decide whether a natural burrow can be managed safely or should be blocked and replaced with a constructed shelter.
Growth and Recordkeeping
Weigh young Sulcatas on the same digital gram scale at regular intervals and record the date, weight and relevant observations. Hydration, a recent meal and defecation can change a single reading, so the long-term pattern matters more than one isolated number.
In Sam's experience, growing Sulcatas may gain approximately one to two grams per day during productive periods, but growth is not perfectly linear. Genetics, age, hydration, temperature, diet and season all affect the rate. Ivory animals may also show their own individual patterns.
The purpose of weighing is not to force rapid growth. It is to recognize unexplained weight loss, prolonged failure to gain or a marked departure from that animal's normal trend. Rapid growth should never be pursued through excessive food or protein.
Health Warning Signs
A properly warmed Sulcata should generally be alert and responsive. Contact an experienced reptile veterinarian when you observe persistent appetite loss, continuing weight loss, weakness, inability to walk normally, swollen or closed eyes, nasal bubbles or discharge, open-mouth breathing, wheezing, repeated neck extension, abnormal stools, constipation, prolapse, shell softening, injury or unusual inactivity.
Temperature and husbandry should be checked immediately when an animal stops eating, but do not assume every problem is caused by temperature. Young tortoises can decline quickly. Early diagnosis is safer than waiting for a severely ill animal.
Handling, Temperament and Adult Strength
Sulcatas can become responsive, food-motivated animals that recognize routines and approach familiar people. Spend time with the tortoise at ground level and use food and calm interaction to build trust. Avoid unnecessary carrying, restraint and children's rough play with young animals.
A larger Sulcata is extremely strong. Fingers can be caught between a leg and the shell when the animal retracts, producing a powerful crushing grip. Do not lift a large tortoise by placing fingers into the spaces beside its legs. Use sufficient trained help and an appropriate transport method.
Mature males may ram people, other tortoises, gates or objects in their enclosure. Learn each animal's behavior, supervise visitors and never allow a child to enter an adult enclosure alone.
